At Techie For Life, we believe everyone should have the opportunity for long term self-reliance and quality independent living. We create a college experience with social and emotional guidance and support for those who are neuro a-typical and who need a distinct approach to college and learning. We provide a safe and supportive vocational education in tech, complete with internships, career search and job placement maximization.
We Take Tech Very Seriously
Computers and electronics are not the problem; they are the solution! Our coding coursework and earned certificates take our student’s interests and turn them into marketable skills. Our life coaches and program teach them balance. Our coursework is patterned after the classes at Dixie State University so that our students can test for college credit if they wish to. TFL was created to get the most up-to-date coding and software skills for our students to be successful interns and attractive employees.
Our Program
"The biggest issue is not academics. It's navigating the social environment and having the independent living skills necessary to be away at college." (Dr. VanBergeijk) We teach tech and life skills for independent living at TFL. We can’t be in the classroom all the time… Nor would we want to. We believe in balancing work with reward, and responsibility with freedom. We “play” as well as we do tech. Our program is set up to support and encourage life as well as career. Outside of the classroom, we promote musical interest, gaming, talents, hobbies, interests, travel and recreation- We have life days every Wednesday, when no classes are scheduled and a day trip or activity is planned.
TECHIE FOR LIFE IS NOT JUST ANOTHER VOCATIONAL SCHOOL
TFL has infused clinically sound and vetted therapeutic theory and practices into every aspect of TFL. From our classroom teaching approach to our rules and guidelines, we have researched and applied the best experience and information to make our program effective. There are no accommodations for non-typical students, they aren’t needed. We built the school around them as the focus. Most things you won’t notice unless you are looking for it. For example, it is critical to always have and understand backup plans for activities to avoid anxiety and model planning for life. Our Tech Coaches know to model, then walk with our students through new concepts and repeat it again, often returning to previous foundational concepts for review. Our students are asked to fail several times before they are asked to succeed. We know trying new things and feeling safe to do so is a part of eventually succeeding. We use that same approach to teach them how to cook, relate, date, and communicate among other things. We create a very safe environment of encouragement and focus on the process, not just the end result. This leads to a life worth living with less stress, more enjoyment in the moment, and better outcomes. We are not a treatment facility, just one that is well equipped and ready to support our students to success. Our Executive Director is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor to oversee and be aware of the potential issues and needs of our students. He meets with them often and is personally involved with each student in our small environment. We have ongoing training for all of our staff to stay up on the latest information and techniques for success.
about us
What Makes Techie for Life Unique
WHY SOUTHERN UTAH?
Southern Utah is one of the fastest growing tech sectors in the united states. It's being referred to as Silicon Sands in the industry and has a rich and healthy software culture of creativity and entrepreneurship. Software coders are in the top ten fastest growing employment sectors in Utah. Within 300 miles of our school, 25,000 jobs are advertised in the software/tech field with salaries of $30K to $80K. There aren't enough trained and experienced techies to fill the jobs at this point, and the need appears to be growing. Most importantly, we are near Dixie College and our partner/co-founder Eric Pederson who promotes our students success with TFL's commitment to providing the most updated coding education available. TFL plans to be the benchmark for the latest employment needs in the coding market-totally aside from serving a unique population of students. Low cost of living, resources for neuro a-typicals, a spirit of partnering and mentoring, and a culture that strives to attain quality living makes Utah an attractive and effective location. We are near dozens of magnificent state and national parks that we utilize to get our students into the outdoors and into active lifestyles. We can snow ski or tube one day, and be hiking through sandstone slot canyons the next with our diverse landscapes. We are two hours from Las Vegas Airport for access to flights. We invite you to come see TFL and our main classroom and living location, which we refer to as the nest, and experience what we can offer.
